Summer trip

This past summer I took a trip to Turkey with Loyola’s Turkish Intercultural Club. One of the things that really struck me in Turkey was that a lot of women were uncovered. I know that in the last couple of years Turkey has become more secular, and it’s highly modernized, more so than most of the other Muslim countries. Turkey was beyond anything I imagined. People in Turkey are the most hospitable than any other country that I have travelled to. We had a great time and I would say to anyone that if you haven’t been to Turkey before, you are missing a great deal.

Response to “Comedy and REligion”

I absolutely agree that comedy and religion is honestly amazing. I think the best part about it is that for the most part people make fun of their own religion which makes it less offensive. If anyone has seen Dane Cook talk about catholics than you know what I mean.

Comedy helps people talk about issues that are taboo, controversial or just hard to talk about without offending anyone. While making our sides ache from laughing, it also gives people insight and a deeper level of understanding that would otherwise be left untalked about. I am so so excited to see “Allah made me funny” just to see what they have to say and see how they think they are perceived in society!!

Response to “Comedy and Religion”

I just wanted to say that comedy and religion as well as comedy with any other area of life is a good thing. i agree, that at times, some jokes may be entirely out of line, vulgar, or reacist, but the main thing is that comedy allows to people to talk about what people normally think about subjects, such as race, religion, government, and all other types of aspects on life. In fact, I would go so far as to say that most, if not all, comedians are valid in whatever there comedy routines are.

For example, Carlos Mencia (which I find some of his routines very funny, especially “Friendship”) during one of his performances talks about vegetarians being the cause of global warming since they are the ones “eating the soultion”. Now there are many causes to global warning, such as the human population, but it still gets people thinking about and, more importantly talking about, what is causing global wamring as well as what exactly a vegetarian is and what they believe in.

Besides that, everyone needs to laugh once in a while.

Response to brezne “Life of Muhammad”

I don’t think that anyone knew that Muhammad was a prophet except for those religious people.  I think that when the monk told them that Muhammad was a prophet, they probably didn’t believe him because they didn’t believe in his religion.  How many Christians or Jews believe that Muhammad is the final prophet, and they even follow the same line of books?  It doesn’t seem like Muhammad knew what they were saying about him.  If Abu Talib believed that Muhammad was the final prophet, then he would have become Muslim, right? And, would the monk tell Muhammad?  He’s a kid.  What if he started taunting all of his friends, saying “I’m the final prophet.”

It would also be interesing if Muhammad was told by the monk that he’s the final prophet.  Just because some guy in the middle of nowhere says you’re a prophet, it doesn’t mean that when something amazing happens to you, like the thing in the cave, that it’s part of being a prophet.

OR, maybe he thought he was going crazy because he was already told that people would be out to get him, and make him go crazy.

Neat stuff.

Omer at Turkish Iftar Night

Did anyone catch Prof. Omer at the Turkish Iftar Night?  He was amazing.  A couple of people spoke about tolerance.   hindu, muslim (Por.f Omer), jewish, catholic.  I thought the event was gonna feel really long, but it went by really quickly.  I wonder if he’s gonna appear as a comedian in that Allah made me Funny movie.  :)  He was so funny and sounded so passionate.  He stole the show.  I don’t remember much of what he said, though, but he talked about power.

I’m really liking this class.  I also have a response to brezne coming up.
