I don’t know much about the different foods that different religions must eat, so this is coming from an ‘outsider’.  I can understand why people of certain faith want to abide by their nutritional restrictions, but it seems that this shift from obeying the rules to just eating what is present has to do with the way the world works today. As the major corporations take over the, let’s say, meat industry, religious affiliation is soon left behind. I’m sure money is more important for them, especially here in America. Obviously, in a Muslim country, there will be plenty of special companies that prepare and package Muslim-ok’d food. But here in America, it is way more difficult to find any sort of specialized product these days. Everything comes from the same three companies, and in order to make you, the shopper, think its ‘different’, they slap another label on it.

I recently watched a documentary about the food industry, and unsurprisingly a kosher meat plant, usually known for it’s humane treatment of the livestock before and during it’s execution, was treating the animals just like any other plant in rural America. It was also owned by a large corporation that owned regular meat packing plants. Interesting, eh?! Is it just globalization?
