Within the story of Layla and Majnun many types of love were exemplified.
Each main character had familial love. Layla loved her father and thus obeyed his orders not to marry the crazy Majnun but the rich man she did not love as much. Unfortunately, the father’s love for her daughter was shallow. He cared more for the family’s reputation than his daughters happiness. Majnun loved and trusted his father. Unlike Layla’s father, Sayyd cared for the well being of his son. Sayyd protected his son and showed kindness towards him.
Obviously there was romantic love. Majnun was crazy in love with Layla. Although the love for her made Majnun insane, there wasn’t much evidence to support that the love was in its deepest form. Majnun was still selfish about the love. Instead of trying to act normal to win her, he let his emotions get the better of him. Majnun did not treat Nawful properly for helping him; Majnun was too self-absorbed in his obsession.
Lastly, there was a national/tribal love. Layla’s father cared more about the family reputation and his sense of belonging to the community more than his daughter. It was not until after their deaths did their love bring the two families together.
