Islam students at LUC

I enjoyed watching the second half of My name is Khan in class last week.  While the film did portray some extremely dramatic stereotypes, I think that it did a good job overall of communicating its message to the viewer.  I also enjoyed the lesson on all of the similarities between many of the world’s religions.  I have never thought about all of the common ground that these religions share, and I really found it to be enlightening.

Like I said last week, I am completely new to everything Islam.  Having said this, I am enjoying the readings that we are being assigned.  I am finding a lot of value in learning about Muhammad’s life, and I feel that it is giving me the basic knowledge of the religion that I need.  I hope that the readings in the future are similar to these ones!

I recently read an article that described how New York city Police were shown a documentary entitled “The Third Jihad”, which described the threat that extremists from the muslim community pose to national security.  Mayor Bloomberg went on record, saying that he was unaware of the screening of this film and whoever chose to air it made a horrible mistake.  Extremists from any group can pose a threat to security, but it becomes even more dangerous when an entire community of people are portrayed as “threatening” because they simply believe in the same God as these extremists.

In response to helloo123, I had a similar experience my freshman year.  One of my good friends was assigned to live with a Muslim girl.  At first she was freaked out because she thought that they would have nothing in common, and nothing to talk about.  After only a couple of days though she realized that there was nothing different her, and they became very close friends.
