Islam students at LUC

Last week in class we learned about the life of the Prophet Muhammad. We learned of his message, his society/community, and the overall general concept of the people during his time. I found it interesting that there was only a list of nine things that we came up with in class that keep people tied to religion. Even more interesting, however, was that these same nine things also keep people away from religion. Also, Muhammad’s message seemed very simple and basic at first with revelations concerning five areas: God, purity, nature, Day of Judgment, and criticism of social practices.

Performing personal acts of piety can be done simply by following the Sunna, or the way of life of the Prophet Muhammad. The Sunna includes the Prophet’s example to the community, as well as advice on daily life routines. Following the Sunna can have an interesting impact because it can cause people to have a new sense of connection to Islam and there can be profound effects.

Thinking back to my early years in Sunday Islamic School, I realize how much that attending those classes has really helped me to the point I am now. I realized that without the education I gained from going to weekend school, I would be completely blinded to the foundation of Islam. Although I have learned so much from my years at weekend school, I look forward to learning more about Islam in a university style of learning. I deeply appreciate the weekend school because I recently met someone who is also attending Loyola, but does not know how to pray or know much about the teaching of Islam. Without a foundation in Islam from an early age, it is increasingly more difficult to get back on track and learn what you should have long ago.

In response to studentsrockaroundtheworld, the act in Canada is not what Islam, or the Quran teaches. As there is extremism and ignorance among all followers of religions, there is also the same among Muslims. As you may remember from our first reading, Islam is a religion of peace and mercy. One of the most stressed names of God is Al-Rahman, the All-Merciful. This act that was committed in Canada was not an act of peace or mercy, and is not what Islam teaches us.
