Last week in class, we discussed the many reasons why people may be involved in religion. We came up with nine reasons, being: norm, the unknown, a purpose, happiness, the fear of being ostracized, code, explanations, the sacred/profane, and a way to cope. The aspect of the unknown broke down into three fears of death, birth, and the unseen.
Robert Gleave’s “Personal piety” discussed Muslims’ ways of imitating the prophet. Copying the ways of Muhammad has been seen as beneficial for followers begin to act with piety and morality. Habitual and non-habitual actions are brought up throughout the article and many Muslims are trying to make Muhammad’s teachings a habit of everyday life.
The New York Police Department was caught acting unethically by spying on Muslims and showing officers films with false information. The video is used to scare Americans into thinking that terrorists are constantly plotting our downfall while acting innocently. Without consent, officers were caught spying on Muslims while praying, eating, and performing daily rituals.
Theo195, it is interesting to hear that you have been attending Catholic schools for your entire education. I was surprised to read that your elementary school required all students to attend the same church. At such a young age, you would think that educators would try to teach acceptance of everyone. I am glad that Loyola has been a positive and diverse experience for you and I hope it continues to be that way.
