In Class: In class this week we discussed Muhammad and the origins of his prophethood and of Mecca. I have a little bit of previous knowledge about Muhammad from my Intro to the Qur’an class but this time, we went much more into the details of the other people involved in Muhammad’s life. We also talked about Mecca and what the place was like back when Muhammad was living. I found that discussion the most interesting, especially the parts about how society was organized and functioned.
The Readings: The “personal piety” reading I found particularly interesting. The reading talked about how Muslims always do their best to follow in Muhammad’s footsteps, acting the way he would. It reminded me a lot of the Christian “WWJD” (What would Jesus do?) and how followers of both religions look up to their prophet as a role model for guidance.
Islam: I read an article this week about Mitt Romney and his ideas about Islam. In a recent interview, he talked about the three biggest threats the U.S. faces. One of these was terrorism, but he made sure to note that terrorism does NOT mean Islam, saying, “If you want my views on Islam, it’s quite straightforward. Islam is one of the world’s great religions and the great majority of people in Islam want peace for themselves and peace with their maker.”

Response: In response to wclark1… It does suck prettttttty bad that people so high up in the US government/society/positions of power can have such horrible biases towards certain groups of people. Those kind of people, while have every right to their opinions, have such a position of influence and can sway other peoples’ thinking in ways they may not even realize.
