In class we covered a lot of the reading that we wrote our quizzes on. Much of Muhammad’s life seemed similar to stories I’ve heard about other religion’s key figures. Muhammad’s youth seemed to have a shadow of death over it with the passing of both his parents. One thing that stuck with me is his family gave him no support except for one young cousin. I’ve been taught to have very loyal family values, so for his own family and clan to torture him and one of his original followers was uneasy for me to handle. Might follow the talk about what we find heinous in their time, someone could just as easily find what we do heinous.
The reading of “personal piety” suggested that the followers of Muhammad were very loyal and tried to do everything to follow in his footsteps. He seemed a bit fabricated at times because he had so many good qualities that he was whatever someone needed him to be, a purpose, a guardian, or a fierce leader.
I just read that France opened the first official Muslim cemetery. For over a hundred years France has outlawed having any cemetery to be exclusive to one religion. PR says that they are taking steps to integrate and be more accommodating to Muslims.
Idk2012: I am in the same boat with not being exposed much to Muslim customs. In a sense I am responsible for that but these posts, readings (although very long and at times confusing), and the in class talks are eye opening. I am excited what more I can learn out of this class.
