I was unable to attend last weeks class because I was in Las Vegas for my 21st birthday. It was, as you can probably imagine, the time of my life. I may have lost a little bit of money, but i gained hundreds of memories. If there is anyone in the class that likes free booze, WHILE gambling, lots of beautiful people, and some extraordinary sights, I would highly recommend going whenever you have the chance. It is the trip of a lifetime and I for one will certainly be going back as soon as possible.
I found the Marion Katz reading, “The Prophet Muhammad in Ritual,” extremely interesting. THe reading “Personal Piety” did a really good job of exploring the Muslim culture in a very easy-to-understand way. I enjoyed reading about the daily tasks and projects of the Muslim people.
Responding to wiseguy17 and ilovegoodreads, I agree with what both of you are saying. Though I am of Caucasian descent, I feel pressured from different facts and tidbits of information shared by the media. It is almost as if they are trying to add to the stereotypes of different types of Americans.
While in Las Vegas this weekend, I could just be falling into one of those stereotypes, but there appeared to be a lot of people of Indian or Middle Eastern descent there. Now, I am not ignorant enough to believe that all of these people were Muslims, but I do like to believe that maybe there are being strides taken to America. Maybe Muslims have been able to further advance in the world force and create good opportunities for themselves.
