I enjoyed having a group discussion in class on Thursday. It was really interesting to see what different people thought of religion. It was also interesting the difference in opinions when it came to organized religion vs faith or spirituality. To me spirituality has always been organized and I had never really thought about what the difference is to me and the issues I have with it.
One of the things I found interesting in Glimpses of Muhammad’s Medinan decade was the discussion of Muhammad as a political leader. It might be the Christian idea that “God is love” but I was surprised at the negative imagery of the section. “Muhammad had intended to get rid of the Jews,” “He did not come to Medina as an arbiter and peacemaker”; there is nothing wrong with any of this it was merely not what I was expecting.
The President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, is visiting Pakistan this week. One of the things President Karzai want to do is open the doors provide the Afghan leaders access to Taliban leaders to in order to initiate peace discussions between the insurgents and the government. While the Pakistan has denied giving sanctuary to Taliban leaders, Afghanistan views Pakistan as essential in ending the conflict is Afghanistan. (Reuters)
To rkdsc89316 I have been looking at all of these states that are passing this kind of legislation, and I don’t think it would really affect Muslims. Now it is not to say that these laws are right; they are offensive in the fact that they come from ignorance, but as far as what affect they would have on Muslims, it would be minimal. I do, however, think it is really ridiculous and impossible for a US court to not look at foreign law, because the entire US legal system, most specifically the laws, are based on English Common Law.
