Last week in class we learned more about the Prophet Muhammad’s life, but more specifically, we focused on his life as a military mastermind. We talked about the Battle of Badr and the Battle of Uhud. It was interesting to learn how Muhammad’s role as a Prophet and a military leader coincided and led to Islam becoming a wide-spread religion.
In the previous reading I learned about how the foundation of Islamic law are deriveed from the Qurana nd the Sunna of the Prophet. It is interesting to note that they both complement each other are both are necessary for Muslims to carry out their daily routines.
I recently read an article online about the monitoring of Muslim students by NYPD all over the Northeast area of the country. I found it outrageous that students are being monitored and watched just as a result of their affiliation with MSA organizations and for follwoing their beliefs. The NYPD tkeeps tabs on students from 15 colleges in the area.
In response to confusedbanana19, there are many differences between culture and religion. It is indeed against Islam to drink alcohol. But as we learned from the readings, not all of the actions of Muhammad are considered mandatory. For example, God told us that we have to pray and Muhammad told us how to pray. We cannot choose to pray a different way. But the Prophet has personal tastes that are not obligatory in Islam, for example his tastes in certain foods.
