In last Thursday’s class, we continued our discussion on the early Muslims and their attempt to gain acceptance and establish themselves in the Arabian Peninsula. We discussed many battles that occurred between the Muslims and the Quraysh. These battles eventually led to the demise of the Quraysh. Whose leaders eventually abandoned their beliefs and converted to Islam.
This week’s reading was a much needed reprieve of the difficult and confusing literature as was presented in the previous readings. The Vision of Islam reiterated the difference between translations and the true Arabic version of the Quran. It was interesting to see how that Islam not only spread the teachings and ideas of Muhammad but also spread Arabic throughout the world. People had to learn Arabic to translate the Quran into their own dialect.
I recently read an article on Cnn about NATO soldiers burning copies of the Quran which led to mass rioting in Afghanistan. When I first read this article I could barely believe what I was reading, I thought to myself there was no way this was actually happening. The troops attempted to stop the spreading of extremist ideas by burning these books and instead may have possibly created more extremist.
In response to shibli6 I also think it is outrageous that the NYPD would be monitoring Islam students’ emails. It seems that it would be a severe waste of money and time to monitor these students, as you stated it is a stretch to assume that these students would be assumed to become radicalized. It would seem that these students are being judged unfairly.
