Islam students at LUC

Blogggggzzzz

I was not in class this week, so I don’t know what we talked about! So, I will talk about  what I learned the week before. I really enjoyed making the list of all the components of religion. I thought it showed just how many varying opinions there are about the purposes of being a part of a religion.

I’m still having an extremely hard time with the book “Hadith.” The book makes it hard for someone, with no prior Islamic knowledge, to understand the material. The online readings from the Cambridge site are a little more clear, but I still have trouble placing when and where certain things are happening. Maybe this is because I am trying to all the events from a Christian/Judeo perspective.

I read about the Qur’an burnings in Afghanistan, as well. The protesters burned the sacred texts while chanting “death to America.” The American troops immediately intervened. The whole situation is sickening. The fact that people feel the need to publicly defile what is sacred to some people and then to get stopped by the people who they are saying hateful words about seems foolish. It seems to me that if they wanted peace, everyone should act respectfully, including the United States soldiers.

In response to confusedbanana19, I am also very interested in the social duties of Muslims. I wonder what the specific guidelines are, like keeping Kosher in Judaism. I also would be curious to see how traditional Muslims practice in a place such as the radically different culture in the United States.
