In class last week, we continued to discuss Muhammad’s life and the spread of Islam. We talked about a lot of battles, but my favorite discussion was the one about Aisha, one of the Prophet’s wives. I thought the stories about her were pretty cool. She had also been mentioned a few times in “Hadith,” so it was nice to get some background on who she was.
One of the readings this week was the Introduction to the Chittick/Murata book. I liked reading it, and I found it a whole lot easier to follow than the Hadith book. I also found it intriguing that the book is organized around the ideas from a famous hadith. I think it really shows just how vital hadiths are to Islam. If the book is anything like the introduction, I think it will be a very enjoyable read.
In the world today, I just read an article about how the US apologized for burning copies of the Qur’an at the Bagram air base detention center library. The White House said that it was a mistake, but an anonymous military official said that there was extremist content in the Qur’an. I don’t know who to believe, but now that I am learning more about what the Qur’an is and what it means to Muslims, I think I’m starting to understand why Muslims were outraged.
In response to snowmakesmehappy, I really appreciate that you mentioned some of the upcoming events of MSA. I honestly didn’t think that the organization did many events, besides for Islam Awareness Week. I definitely have a lot of items I can donate to the orphan sponsorship drive. I also really appreciate the cancer foundation work that MSA is doing, as my friend is having a rough time with her cancer right now.
