In class we spoke about the time Muhammad spent in Medina and his eventual return to Mecca. We learned the Muhammad was given orders by God to engage in violence, but with tight restrictions and parameters around which it was appropriate to do so. I thought it was interesting that Muhammad was given orders from God to engage in violence, and that Muhammad was able to gain so many followers.
The three readings we were assigned for the past week were interesting. I found it especially interesting to read and learn about the “Personal Piety” reading. Learning that Muhammad was revered in every aspect of his life provided a good context for me to understand how his followers viewed and regarded him.
This week I read more on the crisis happening within Saudi Arabia. The violence has escalated and the international community is struggling to make any substantive impact on quelling the crisis. This past week A senior Al Qaeda member in Saudi Arabia insistent that the Saudi Prince expel all non-Muslims living within the country.
In response to macbookuser1, I too was thinking about the many similarities between the traditions of the Islamic and Christian faiths. Over dinner last night I had a conversation with Father Jerry downtown about how interesting the Jewish, Christian and Islamic faiths are when examined together.
