I think one thing that resonated the most with me from the last class would be the idea of how wrong it is to “accuse a chaste woman of being unchaste.” I think that is something our society as a whole should look to.  So often, people, especially women, look at the way women are dressed and call them a whore or slut. I think that this is a problem that needs to be corrected. So more people should look to this Muslim ideal.

I was a little confused on some parts of the Mattson reading, particularly the part where Sunni’s fear of teaching that the Qur’an as the incarnation of God’s word. I may be able to understand this, but it was followed by a passage that seemed to support the idea that the Qur’an was not the speech of man but came from God.

The latest, and longest, of the “Arab Spring” has culminated in a change in Power in Yemen. Though, I don’t if the election can be totally deemed a success. In the single candidate Presidential election, the man elected was Vice President of the former leader, who served for 33 years.  Another thing that would stop this election from being totally successful is the unrest in the south, the death of 9 people, as well as the fact that polls were closed in some places due to opposition.

In response to dotdotdot12, while I agree with your assessment to an extent, I do have to wonder about the Islamic process for disposing of sacred objects that have been defaced. I do know that in most religions, burning is the proper way to disposes of sacred texts, but this does exclude Hindu texts as well as the Qur’an. It might just be a matter of educating the soldiers as to the proper protocol because I think most would agree that extremism would be defamation of this sacred text.
