Last week in class we finished the story of Muhammad’s biography. I thought it was very interesting how Muhammad became more of an assertive leader later in his life. The way he commanded that Mecca be an Islamic state really surprised me, and i thought that in some ways it even contradicted some of the teachings of Islam. I also thought that the different stories about his young wife’s age were interesting, and I really hope that he did not marry a 6 year old.
The assigned readings were on the Hadith. The religion of Islam is becoming more and more interesting to me as the semester and the readings progress. I enjoyed beginning to read about some of the differences between Shi’ite and Sunni Muslims, and I look forward to gaining a better understanding of their fundamental differences.
This week I read an article that discussed US soldiers burning pages of the Quran. I thought that this was very disrespectful. A formal apology was issued, but the underlying reasons of ignorance and disrespect still linger. In my opinion this is on the same level of another country publicly burning the American flag, which I am sure would cause an uproar among the American people.
In response to helloo123, Unfortunately I was not able to make it to the screening of Rashid Ghazi’s movie because I had a night class, but based on your description, it sounds like a very interesting film. It sounds like you had an incredible opportunity to speak with the director, and I am very disappointed that I missed out on this. Hopefully I will be able to see the film another time, and make it to future events like this in the future.
