These past two weeks, we learned about the five pillars of Islam.  I always wondered what these were.  In my Catholic upbringing, we were taught that they were at the center of the Islamic religion.  I thought that the breakdown of goals (moment, daily, month, year,  and lifetime) was really incredible.  These tasks throughout the [...]

TI am really interested to finish our discussion on the pillars of Islam. I was raised a Catholic and attended Catholic schools growing up. WHenever we talked about Islam, we always learned about the Five Pillars. It is interesting hearing what this is really about, not through the Christian faith but from an actual Islam [...]

This week, I watched a documentary about hajj, which is the pilgrimage to Mecca that is an obligation for Muslims. It was interesting that people save money their whole lives to go to Mecca for the hajj. An expert described the whole experience as multiple super bowls each year with the crowd as the players. [...]

This week in class we did the skits. THey were pretty fun. I especially liked that my group won the extra credit. This week in my Intro to the Qur’an we talked about Jihad. We talked about how the word jihad actually means “struggle” and the most of the parts of this struggle actually have [...]

Today I went to the discussion by Dalia Mogahed about the demonstations in Egypt. I expected it to be a discussion that dealt with the reasons behind the uprisings from different perspectives. I did not realize that she was a statistician. This led to a very monotone fact filled discussion and analyses of a series [...]

This week we began a group project, then started a movie. The movie was really interesting. I realized how ignorant I am about my surroundings as I drove through that neighborhood on my way to school each day for high school and never really saw anything of that sorts. They always told us not to [...]

Last week we did not have class because it was spring break.  I look forward to the documentary we are going to watch, hopefully it truly does change my life. Some of this weeks readings dealt with Islamic law.  I also liked the poems in the readings of Rumi. Professor Mozaffer talks about what it [...]

Last week, I was unable to come to class because I had a basketball game. This was the last class of the year that I will miss because of basketball. It seems that we discussed the origins of man and then began a Bollywood movie. I missed the first movie that we watched so I [...]

IN class we learned about Muhammad banning the Qurash then his battles with them.  Then we talked about his peaceful march on Mecca.  I thought that it was interesting that God gave Muhammad rules for fighting. The quizzes are very helpful for understanding the readings.  These readings delve further into the hadith.  I learned that [...]

THis past week we discussed both the functions and duties of religion as well as the problems with religion.  I really enjoyed the discussion because so often in religion classes in my life, discussions only talk about the positive aspects of religions.  We also talked about the move to Medina.  It is interesting that Muhammad [...]
